Golden Axe 2 by nenerocks Golden Axe 2 by nenerocks
Splash page of a scene from the game Golden Axe 2, a game exclusively released on Sega Genesis. I always had a big interest in beat-em'-ups like this one, especially one with a swords n' sorcery theme (i've been getting into that more and more lately...)

Tyris-Flare, the amazon heroin of the game, infiltrates the final dungeon of Dark Guld, but finds herself surrounded by towering minotaurs who are about to pound her into the ground with their maces.... she has just disposed of one of the soldiers, who turns into stone upon death... sitting in the foreground is her only hope, a spell book, which will enable her to cast magic, including summoning a gigantic dragon to engulf her enemies in flames...

WANNA SEE ANOTHER VERSION OF TYRIS FLARE?:

The minotaurs were my most hated enemy in the game because of their fast attacks. >.<

Two Tall Minotaur Guards, with Giant Maces? No problem for Tyris-Flare! Start swinging your sword! Use the running boot-kick! Ex-spell some Fire Magic! Do something!

Great "Golden Axe" artwork! I'm also a fan of the Series, too!

Not bad at all. A bit of an issue with her midsection and hips, though- it looks like she's just random meatbag from the end of the ribcage to the tops of her legs. Could have used a bit more definition on the spine and side, and she seems to have misplaced her entire butt. Whoopsie.

That aside, very nice work. I lurved Golden Axe and its sequels and many other games from the era, and would happily play them more today given enough time. In that situation, I personally would use her backflip move, nuts to the magic.

Still, good to see, and a VERY nice background. Are you maybe an architect or something?

I love all the subtle details from the game you captured in this picture: The bust of Dark Guld on the pillar, the book, the defeated enemy turned to "stone" on the floor, and even the way the two minotaurs attack from both sides. I can picture the scene: They'll totally abuse their dash attack, until she picks up that last book and obliterates them with her dragon summon. Just like in the game. ;) Great work!

thats pretty much what i do in the game since this is an actual scenario in it... except the book, i dont think there are any books lying around in this part, but i totally do destroy the minotaurs w/ the dash kicks... thanks for the comment!

The perspective on this is very nicely done :O Could you share with me how you colored the background? I would like to work more with lineart into my backgrounds. I normally paint my backgrounds like this here - [link] But I REALLY need to expand.

The lineart on this must have taken you forever! I struggle to include backgrounds and characters together on one page. I usually scan them in separately as sketches. Do you have any tips for me? =)

Overall, I really like this image. The colors of the fires reflection on the stones and the glowing book are my favorite.

this was a different method i used last year, i dont really use it anymore cuz i havent inked anything recently... its basically coloring your lineart (without going outside the lines) yeah this piece took a while but it was all one drawing (but i now usually draw seperate things on seperate layers, like the ninja gaiden one) coloring lineart can be done using VERY CLEAN pencil lineart, but id recommend inking. its a bit of a complicated process where you have to seperate the lineart layer using channels and copying and pasting and filling... so heres the tutorial where i learned it from (assuming you have photoshop):

there are many more tutorials on the home page of this site if your interested in alternate coloring techniques, effects and more... hope its what your looking for...

I played through the Golden Axe games a few times on Sega Genesis Collection (PS2). This is a great representation of that game, especially with the spellbook on the ground. Nice touch.
Everything looks quite good; the background, the characters, and the lighting.

yup... on a collection disc of sega classics called "Sega Ages", it has a remake of the first golden axe where its all in 3D.... however, it got really bad ratings for some reason...

Ah, thanks.
Well, I read a review of it. I get the imrpession that it's almost exactly like the original game (gameplay-wise), but, that's the problem for them. They expected more from a game in this day and age, it seems.

yea i mean, im sure that was the idea, to just give it a new 3D twist, but not change it completely, then it wouldnt be classic golden axe... i personally think it looks badass

Yeah, it looked pretty cool.
Maybe it would've scored higher as a handheld 3D game. Classic games get remade and stuff on handhelds quite ab it, without changing much, and they can still score well because they expect less when it's not on a console. :hmm:

Oh this brings back memories. Just because of you I'm going to have to go and play the first one (Someone borrowed 2 from me and I never got it back :'().

Those minotaurs used to annoy the hell out of me! So did the wizards. I love the lighting, it gives a certain drama that makes you want to chop stuff like the good old days, but that might just be me. I like your style too. Very nice work :ahoy:

Thanks for some warm and fuzzy wizard-whacking memories. :+fav:
